(Pardon my French)

Keep on writing!P.J. Gene Tierney in Leave Her to Heaven is evil and great at it.
Jane Greer in Out of the Past, Lorraine Day in The Locket, Joan Fontaine in Born to be Bad and Jean Simmons in Angel Face rotten to the core and great to watch!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539700916676246998.post-56643480590297759092009-06-08T22:59:22.187-07:002009-06-08T22:59:22.187-07:00Riku, thanks for the compliment (I think that'...Riku, thanks for the compliment (I think that's what it was), and another great list. After writing that comment I sat down and wrote out a list of my own favorite female villains and was easily able to come up with 20! Many of your choices also occurred to me. I especially liked your inclusion of Judi Dench in "Notes on a Scandal." I took a lot of flak at Mick LaSalle's blog for being such a booster of this movie, but I loved it, and the usually sweet Dench's deliciously malevolent character made the movie for me. Bette Davis is my favorite actress of all time, in large part because of her great villains--from Mildred in "Of Human Bondage" to "Baby Jane" and "The Nanny" in the 60s. With so many performances to choose from, "The Letter" was a great choice, but I liked her icy monster Regina in "The Little Foxes" even better.

I hope you won't think it an imposition if I add a couple to the list. Any list of female villains with Davis and Stanwyck immediately makes me thing of Joan Crawford, and I'd pick "Queen Bee" as my favorite Crawford monster (as both movie and performance, compelling camp). Best child monster: Patty McCormack in "The Bad Seed." Best Western villainness: Mercedes McCambridge in "Johnny Guitar." Finally, most beautiful monster: Gene Tierney as Ellen ("she loves too much") in "Leave Her to Heaven."R. D. Finchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05045080274131718843noreply@blogger.com
